Born in Colombia, South America, to a Chinese mother and Colombian father, Maria was raised in a multicultural household, which led her to become fluent in Spanish, Chinese, and English.
She grew up in Vancouver, Canada, where her passion for storytelling began at a young age.
At the age of 17, she was chosen as a student reporter and scholarship recipient by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). She then attended Simon Fraser University, where she graduated with a B.A in Communications.
Maria has worked in television in Vancouver (Canada) and Hunan (China) for Vancouver Television Channel and the Hunan TV International Channel.
Currently based in Vancouver and Beijing, she is pursuing a master’s degree in Global Business Journalism at Tsinghua University. Her areas of academic interest include global and intercultural communication, arts and culture journalism, and new media studies.
As a master’s student in Journalism, Maria aims to share her passion for storytelling and journalism through her personal blog.
Her mission is to become a unique storyteller and cultural link between China, Canada and Colombia.
